The Svadhina Journey

Our Story

Celebrating independence, artisanal heritage, and the timeless grace of Indian textiles.

Born from Freedom. Woven with Purpose.

Svadhina — meaning self-reliant in Sanskrit — is more than a saree brand. It is a celebration of the Indian woman who carries centuries of tradition in her stride, and the future in her eyes.

We started Svadhina with a simple belief: that the women who weave our sarees deserve to be known, and the women who wear them deserve to feel extraordinary.

Our Weavers

Every saree in our collection is handcrafted by master weavers from across India — from the silk looms of Varanasi to the cotton traditions of Odisha and the zari work of Surat. We work directly with weaver communities, ensuring fair wages, sustainable practices, and the preservation of craft forms that have been passed down for generations.

Our Promise

When you drape a Svadhina saree, you are wearing a story — of a weaver’s hands, of a region’s heritage, and of a woman’s strength. We are committed to bringing you sarees that are authentic, ethically sourced, and timelessly beautiful.

Urmi Mahapatra

Founder & CEO, Svadhina

Urmi Mahapatra is a proud daughter of West Bengal — a land where the love for handloom runs as deep as the Ganges. Growing up surrounded by the richness of Bengali textile traditions, Urmi developed a deep reverence for the saree, not just as a garment, but as a statement of identity, grace, and strength.

A proud Bengali at heart, Urmi wears her sarees not just on festivals, but every day — as a quiet act of cultural pride and self-expression. It was this personal relationship with the saree that inspired her to build Svadhina: a platform that brings India’s finest handwoven sarees to women who, like her, believe that wearing a saree is wearing your roots.

“Every saree tells a story. I wear mine every day — and Svadhina was born from that love.” — Urmi Mahapatra

Wear your story. Your way.

“Every saree tells a story of freedom, grace, and identity. Wear your story. Wear Svadhina.”
